MUSICC consortium 2nd annual meeting in Brussels, Belgium

The MUSICC consortium, dedicated to advancing the development of next-generation COVID-19 vaccines, held its 2nd annual meeting in Brussels, Belgium on April 15-16th.

This gathering brought together experts from across the consortium and its funders to discuss the project’s groundbreaking progress and future challenges. Many consortium members attended in-person at the elegant University Foundation, an ideal base for collaborative discussions and presentations, while others joined online. Conducting periodic in-person meetings such as this are vital for nurturing and strengthening professional relationships and collaboration across the project.

Since the first project meeting in London, UK, just a year ago, the consortium members have made significant progress. This meeting provides an opportunity to reflect on our achievements and discuss the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Day 1

Day 1 kicked off with a light continental breakfast, setting a relaxed tone for the day. The vibrantly decorated Félicien Cattier room buzzed with conversation as attendees gathered for the commencement of presentations. After welcomes and introductions from MUSICC Consortium Lead Prof. Chris Chiu and Dr. Christine Dahlke, Project Lead at MUSICC co-funder CEPI, the day proceeded with presentations from Work Package Leaders and discussions with the project’s Ethics Advisory Panel. The day featured refreshment breaks and an enjoyable lunch, giving attendees the chance to reconnect and delve deeper into the day’s presentations and conversations.

To conclude day 1, the consortium reconvened for dinner at nearby restaurant Volle Gas. This was another chance to network, continue discussions, and unwind over delicious local cuisine, in preparation for the next day’s proceedings.

Day 2

Day 2 of the meeting was equally productive with presentations on data management, project management, project finances and communication and dissemination strategies. The day concluded with a spirited discussion on innovative pathways for specific aspects of the project.

Prof. Chiu then brought the 2nd MUSICC annual meeting to a close, reflecting on the productivity of the discussions that had taken place and the value of conducting such conversations in-person.

The discussions generated during both days of the meeting fostered a real sense of positive and proactive collaboration between consortium members. The exchange of ideas was truly inspiring, showcasing the collaborative efforts that are paving the way for significant advancements and giving a real sense optimism for the future of the project.

Overall, this year’s annual meeting was a large success, with many conversations continuing into action plans. The location of next year’s annual meeting is yet to be determined, but deliberations have already begun. Wherever it may be there will no doubt be plenty of progress to discuss and ample enthusiasm and dedication from the consortium.
